3 awe inspiring road trips around the world

Road trips are a fun and adventurous way of exploring new territory with friends, family and partners.Below are five destinations to tempt you.

Pirate Route, Jamaica

Jamaica was famous for pirates due to its location below the eastern end of Cuba, the heart of the Spanish Main. Port Royal was known as the “wickedest city in Christendom” set between the Blue Mountains and a sunlit turquoise sea. In a 1692 an earthquake struck, submerging two-thirds of the city beneath the sea. Jamaica was once the hub of pirates and if you go and look closely, you’ll see reminders of them everywhere. Remains of Port Royal lie at the tip of a 9-mile, breakwater road called the Palisadoes (pictured below), which encircles Kingston Harbour.

Port Royal is the starting point for your journey where you can hire a rental car to drive off on your 380-mile trip. Your drive will first take you east, past a beached freighter, into Kingston. From there you will drive clockwise around the Island taking you past green savannas, sugarcane fields, and mountains, with the bright-blue sky in the distance.

Cornwall, England

I've lived in Cornwall for 6 years, enjoying the scenic car drives that this beautiful part of England has to offer with whitewashed seaside villages and leafy green countryside amid Celtic ruins. The Cornish peninsula is a mix of attractions and natural beauty. I understand now when people say that they feel Cornwall has an island feel to it - the steep cliffs of the North coast is opposite to the subtropical gardens of the south coast.

When driving in Cornwall, you need to brace yourself for narrow lanes and bumpy beach roads.

One of the great Cornish road trips it to start off at Penzance with a visit to the ninth-century Penzance Cross, Cornwall’s famous Celtic crosses. From Penzance, drive 3 miles east to the awe inspiring St. Michael’s Mount (pictured below), one of the most photographed places in Cornwall.

Brandywine Valley, Pennsylvania and Delaware

A road trip through Brandywine Valley is guaranteed to provide you with a glimpse into the world of extravagance of American aristocracy. Travellers will encounter country mansions surrounded by gardens and filled with world-class art; this was New World royalty at its finest.

In the Brandywine Valley, Routes 100 and 52 go through the château country where the locals are very protective about the views. The narrow and twisting roads trace the river, slowly leading you through lanes shaded by branches of tulip trees and oaks.

If you will be hiring a car as a precaution you are advised to take out car hire excess insurance in advance.
